Emission Limits for Dummies
Emission Limits for Passenger Cars and Heavy Duty Engines
On-Road Passenger Vehicles and Light Duty Trucks
Model Year 2007
- Both PV and LDT (<8500#) must meet Tier II Bin 5 emission standards.
- The emission limits apply to all vehicles no matter what fuel they use.
- Medium Duty Passenger Vehicles (MDPV), between 8500 & 10000 lbs must also adhere to these emission limits. SUV's and passenger vans fall into this category.
- Commercial MDPV's, light trucks and cargo vans can be certified as heavy duty vehicles.
- PM - .01, NOx - .07, CO - 4.2 & HC - .018
- 2007 - CRD, EGR, DOC, DPF, SCR, NOx Trap
Model Year 2007
· All Heavy Duty Diesel Engines over 8500# that are not used for passenger purposes must meet 2007 EPA emission standards.
· Light Heavy Duty Diesel Engines (LHDDE) 8500 - 19500#
· Medium Heavy Duty Diesel Engines (MHDDE) 19500 - 33000#
· Heavy Heavy Duty Diesel Engines (HHDDE) >33000#
· PM - .01 g/bhp, NOx - .20 g/bhp, HC - .14 g/bhp
· The NOx limits will be phased in between 2007 and 2010. Very few engines meeting the .20 g/bhp will appear before 2010.
Exhaust Aftertreatment Devices typically used to meet Emission Limits:
- 2007 - CRD, EGR, DOC, DPF
- 2010 - Devices mentioned above with SCR or NOx Trap
Model Year 2000-2008
- Phase in of Tier 2 & 3 standards.
- Emission Standards are met by advanced engine design, with out the use of oxidation catalysts.
Model Year 2008 - 2015
- Phase in of Tier 4 Standards
- Reduce PM and NOx further by 90% with exhaust aftertreatment - similar to those 2007-2010 standards for on-highway engines.
- CO emission levels remain unchanged from the Tier 2-3 stage.
- 2011-2014: 175<750 Hp, 2012-2014: 75<175 Hp, 2013 50<75 Hp
- DOC, EGR, DPF
- 500 ppm max. effective June 2007
- 15 ppm max. effective June 2010.
